Summary
<p>Major natural catastrophes such as floods, earthquakes and fires leave their marks on public memory. In the end of September 1939, flood disaster, which is still remembered, caused by excessive seasonal rainfall in Ödemiş (especially Birgi), Bayindir and Tire districts of Izmir resulted in great economic damage as well as human loss.</p> <p>In this study, the damage of the 1939 flood disaster in the provinces of Tire and Bayındır, especially Ödemiş’s Birgi, will be discussed in the light of archival documents, the suggestion and the precautions will be taken into consideration to avoid any disaster, especially “Birgi” that caused such great damage again. </p>
