Özet

Abstract 117 Alfa interferon (alfa-IFN) treatment results of 30 children with pure chronic HBV infection (group I) and of seven with HBV infection and leukemia on remission (group II) were evaluated in order to investigate the effectiveness and safety of alfa-IFN in children. The patients received alfa-IFN by subcutaneous injection 5 million U/m2 thrice a week for six months. At the end of the treatment 15 patients (50%) had complete response (clearance of HBV DNA, sero-conversion of the HBe and normalization of ALT) in group I. In this group, of 14 patients with complete response who completed one year after treatment 13 (43%) showed sustained response but in one patient recurrence was observed (6.6%). In three of the patients (10%) HBsAg disappeared and in two (6.7%) anti-HBs became positive. In group II, four patients (57.1%) had complete response, but no patient showed a sustained response. No severe adverse effect causing therapy cessation was observed. Results of group I was as follows: (Table) Our results suggest that alfa-IFN is an effective and a safe agent in the treatment of chronic HBV infection in children but in terms of sustained response not hopeful in children with underlying hematological malignancy.
