Summary

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between the plasma 25- hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels, anthropometric and biochemical parameters of the Turkish national team athletes. A total of 48 athletes, 19 women (18.63±3.06 years) and 29 men (18.90±2.69 years) were included in the study. For body fat ratio, the skinfold thickness was measured by caliper and calculated according to Jackson-Pollock 7 method. Plasma 25(OH)D, testosterone, insulin, cortisol, TSH, thyroxin, glucose, lipids (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglyceride) were measured for the biochemical evaluation. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS v.18.0. A p value ?0,05 was considered statistically significant. The mean plasma 25(OH)D levels were 28.37±9.39 ng/ml in males and 22.58±8.03 ng/ml in females. The mean body fat ratio was calculated as 4.42±1% in males and 13.73±3.17% in females. No significant correlation was found between the body fat ratio and 25(OH)D levels. However, a negative correlation was found between the 25(OH)D levels and total cholesterol (p<0.05) and LDL cholesterol (p<0.05) levels in females. There was a positive correlation between the 25(OH)D levels and TSH levels (p<0.05) in males. The results of our study showed a significant 25(OH)D insufficiency in national athletes. In addition, relationships between 25(OH)D levels and plasma lipids and some hormones suggested that 25(OH)D may have significant roles on energy metabolism.
