Background: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is characterized by airflow limitation, oxygen desaturation, and sleep fragmentation, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired concentration, and an increased risk of accidents, including occupational accidents. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of OSA and its impact on occupational accidents among rotating shift workers. Methods: The study was conducted in a textile factory between April and June 2024. OSA risk was evaluated using the STOP-BANG (SB) questionnaire (SB score ≥3 indicating risk). Sleep-related conditions were assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Results: Among 217 workers (7.4% women), 82 (37.8%, median age 35.5 years) were at risk for OSA, according to SB. Compared to non-OSA workers, those with OSA risk were older (p<0.001), had a higher body mass index (BMI) (p<0.001), larger neck and waist circumferences (p<0.001), longer work histories (p=0.014), more comorbidities (p=0.006), and higher ESS scores (p=0.007), whereas subjective sleep time, sleep latency, ISI and PSQI scores were similar. Occupational accidents were reported by 79 workers (36.4%). Older age (p=0.038), male gender (p=0.044), higher BMI (p=0.003), larger neck (p=0.026) and waist circumferences (p=0.005), and higher risk of OSA (p=0.001) were linked to increased accident risk. In multivariate analysis, only OSA risk remained significantly associated with a greater likelihood of accidents (OR: 2.55, p<0.001). Conclusion: Over one-third of shift workers were at risk for OSA, raising accident risk 2.5-fold. Screening and interventions are key.
